One of our neighbours is an elderly single lady. She is very sweet but is perhaps suffering from a bit of dementia as she does forget things. She's lost her purse a couple of times in one week, and every time we have a conversation, she always asks me the same things, like 'Have we settled in well' even though we moved in over two years ago.
Today her son came around in a bit of a state looking for some information. Occasionally, we get dodgy types knocking on our door asking if we have any antiques that we want to sell. We let them know in no uncertain terms that no, we don't, and even if we did, we would sell to a reputable dealer and not some man-in-a-van going door to door.
Unfortunately, our next door neighbour is not quite so forceful with them, and apparently sold them a beautiful heirloom - a grandfather clock - that is hundreds of years old and worth a lot of money. She sold this clock to them for a couple of hundred pounds.
Her son has no idea who she sold this clock to, or how to go about locating it. Fingers crossed that he does manage to track down these con artists who prey on the elderly.
** update ** Neighbours son rang today to say that she sold the clock for a measly £30. That is just clearly so wrong. He suspects that the clock is now up for sale on ebay with a current bid of £1800. He will be in touch with the police, but as she sold the clock he's not sure what they can do. He also doesn't think they have any insurance details with things like serial numbers or identifying details, or any photos of the clock. Our neighbours alarm has been going off frequently lately, so he is quite worried that they will may quietly come back for more at some stage. Apparently, they were also spotted removing a painting from her house, but they may have put it back because one of the other neighbours saw them removing it.
